Description:The health services intern works with participants to address their personal health goals, by serving as an advocate to help them overcome any barriers they have in obtaining and maintaining health care. They also serve as a health educator by providing information that will assist participants in making informed decisions about her health care.
Duties:� Facilitate, or co-facilitate, health education sessions for participants. Topics can include heart disease, smoking cessation, exercise, nutrition, diabetes, asthma management, etc.

� Maintain participant files, record progress notes, and enter service-related information into the agency database.

� Work as a team member with Learning Center staff, case managers, other building staff, Health Services Coordinator, and the agency as a whole toward the agency-wide goal of helping participants obtain/maintain housing and achieve personal goals.

� Provide necessary resources and referrals to participants in order to help them achieve their health goals.

� Assist in managing on-site clinics. This includes working with our on-site provider from Heartland Health Outreach, engaging participants in services, appointment scheduling, and assisting participants with necessary follow up as needed.

� Provide support, encouragement, and objective feedback to participants.

� Participate in staffings as needed and attend on-site agency trainings or workshops that are offered during internship hours

� Act as an advocate for participants on caseload.
Qualifications:Interest in working one-on-one with participants, and serving as a non-judgmental advocate in multiple facets of participants' lives. Ability to engage with, and build rapport with participants. Ability to demonstrate empathy. Good organizational and communication skills. Ability to utilize a person-centered approach, and a strengths-based perspective.
Students applying for this internship should be interested in working one-on-one with participants and serving as a non-judgmental advocate for a variety of health related services. Applicants should be open to new experiences and learning, flexible, and creative in problem-solving. Applicants should also be interested providingf various health related information to groups. Additional qualities include: organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to build and maintain partnerships with participants, staff, and others.

All Interns are expected to follow and abide by the ethical standards of social work practice outlined by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the American Counseling Association (ACA). In addition, Interns are expected to abide by the policies of Deborah's Place including, but not limited to: rules governing confidentiality, dual relationships, honesty, and integrity. All Interns are expected to always act in good faith and in keeping with the mission and values of Deborah's Place. Interns must have an overall commitment to serving the women of Deborah's Place, and to contributing to a positive, respectful, and accepting environment at Deborah's Place.
